Who Is at Risk for Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide. There are three main kinds of lung cancer — small cell, non-small cell and carcinoid lung tumors. Non-small cell is the most common.

Around 240,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, mostly among smokers. A growing number of cases are being found in people who never smoked, which means factors like the environment or genetics may be involved. Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.

Why Screen for Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Orange County. One of the challenges with this disease is that symptoms do not appear until it is already at an advanced stage. Research shows that for high-risk people, LDCT scans will discover lung cancer at an early stage 64% to 85% of the time, reducing mortality by 20 percent. Screenings are cost-effective, reliable, convenient, and comfortable for the patient.
